Little Drive Around Scotland

Stutopia

Recommended Posts

A few friends from a very small driver's club (three of us ex-Zedders who met on here) went for a little spin up to Scotland back in May. As always, the countryside and roads were stunning, however, this time the weather was also magnificent - 5 days on the spin! Literally unheard of.

We went around anti-clockwise for the first time and it's a much better way around, as the scenery just gets better and better with each day, instead of tailing off. Starting in Edinburgh, up to Inverness (via the Cairngorms), across to Gairloch (along Loch Shin), down to Glencoe and then heading home, via New Lanark with a little run through the borders and Kielder for dessert.

Here's a couple of snaps from along the way.

Some amazing photo's there, looks like it was a superb road trip all round. Such a shame people don't appreciate what we have on our shores.

I’ve done it March before, much harder to appreciate in sideways rain!

Cracking pictures. This is on my list to do at some point. The scenery looks amazing. Oh and the cars look great as well.

If you want a starter for 10 route, this isn't too shabby - https://www.google.com/maps/d/u/0/edit?mid=1v8t5qjqbFSnlZI5udbLv9TRpBfLsqjeG&usp=sharing

That's amazing. Something I've wanted to do for a while now. Thanks @Stutopiafor the details of the route and hotels! 👍

The hotels were hit and miss, but they had the virtue of being, cheapish, available and in the right places!

Did it last year, doing it again this year. Well worth the drive - that was all in one day, the section from Perth to Cambridge was 422 miles in just under 5 1/2 hours with 2 fuel stops.

I was hoping you were going to post up some amazing pictures of your trip Stu.

Wifey who originates from Fife has been banging on for years about how amazing the roads and scenery are.
Well I’m now up for this trip next year as long as you can organise the same weather.......

Hotels sounds perfect to me. Cheap and in the right places! Ha. How did you manage fuel if you don't mind me asking?

Don't plan to fill up north of the Fort William to Inverness diagonal on a Sunday, there was one just onto Skye that was open. Don't expect Shell anywhere past there either. I had to put some Gulf 95 :yuck: in at one point. I see between 24 and 34 mpg in the Cayman depending on enthusiasm, with a 64L tank. In a Zed you might be seeing quite a bit less mpg than that, but with the 80L tank it probably evens up. Always pack a bottle of octane booster, maybe two.

One of our lads, who'd never been up there before, was pretty blown away that this kind of beautiful scenery is right on our doorstep, "Lord of the Rings" was a phrase I heard more than once. Aside from a few places in the world like New Zealand, the Alps, the Andes, probably parts of Canada and the Himalayas - it's as good a set of mountains as you'll see anywhere. The roads themselves are glorious and quiet. If you can avoid a weekend and school holidays, it is nirvana.

Ullapool on the north West coast has a Gleaner Petrol station with Super, and with a good range of accommodation/eating options forms a useful base to tour around northern Scotland on some brilliant driving roads so no need to worry about finding other petrol stations unless mileage is well into the hundreds. ;)

Love that road (A832) and the view going down into Kinlochewe.  The exhaust sounds bouncing off the valley make it a driver's heaven.

And also the the Scots Police sensible approach to encourage passing on single track roads:
