Headlamp washer and rear window washer issue

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone...some help and direction needed pleeeeese.

I just bought a 2007 350z last weekend.

The headlamp washers don't work at all and while the rear window arm will wipe I can't get any wash fluid to spray.

Could this be a relay or pump failure and do both things use the same pump/relay for both headlamp and rear wash ?

I am no mechanic, far from it, but wondered if its an easy thing to investigate......the garage I bought it from is 3 hours drive away but will

pay for the fix as long as its not done by a main Nissan dealer.

any help appreciated.

If you've bought the car and the seller is happy to pay for it to be fixed then I'd be seriously looking at taking it to your local Z specialist (Tarmac, Cougar, Horsham Dev etc.) and get it serviced and then glanced over by them to see if they see any evident issues.

They'll find and fix most problems, you'd rather know about them now and know the seller has offered to fix one issue (might not fix any more further down the line so bunch them together now).

But the links above are what you'll need to fix your issue at home!

There are two reservoirs on the 350Z, one each side behind the front bumper. Both need to be full for everything to work correctly.

Ooooooo....thats interesting....only seen one washer reservoir.....I'll check that when my son gets home with the beast.

Be prepared

You've opened a can of worms here, isn't that right @EcoFriendlyAL?

But seriously, have a little look at the 350z subsection for tyres. There's a few tried and trusted tyres to cover most price ranges and purposes (fast road, all season, track toy etc)

They are both behind the bumper unless it has been removed.

The windscreen washer reservoir bottle and pumps is on the R/H side and the headlamp washer reservoir bottle and pump is on the L/H side.

Well I'm bloody mystified....Ok so the bottles may be lurking on the bowels behind the bumper....where do you refill these damn things !!??

The filler cap...little blue lid...is on the left side of the engine near the wing...nowhere near the bumper....and from looks of it thats where it was put in the factory.

Yep two reservoirs and only one filler - have you topped up via the filler ?

yep......so could be a blockage to the second reservoir......does one reservoir feed the headlamps and rear window and the other reservoir the windscreen ...that would make sense to me as the windscreen gets used loads more.....

thansk for you help..

From memory, (I don't have a Zed now) there is a button in the dash under the steering wheel which activates the headlight washer - have you tried that ?

yep you are right and tried that...with lights on too....

Well that's the usual problem, but I think you're mixing up your lefts and rights - the LHS of the car is the passenger side and as @ZMANALEX says, the headlamp reservoir is on that side; I'm not sure if you can access it without  removal of the front bumper, but Alex may confirm. First thing I'd do is check if I could hear the pump trying to work on that side or indeed on both sides before I took anything to bits ;)

Good luck.

Quick update
So after a quick squizz with a high powered torch that could light up the moon....I have seen that I do indeed have 2 reservoirs and both are topped up with wash fluid.....when we activate the rear washer the arm will move but no wash fluid is pumped and we could not hear any pump come on....same for headlamp washer....so looks like a failed pump....or fuse perhaps.  The headlamp washers completely don't work...they don't pop out and spray the headlights at all.

so...for this washer malarky issue....i get there are 2 reservoirs and one filler cap....

My windscreen wipers and washer fluid are working fine.....

My rear wiper arm is fine...but no washer fluid pumped

Headlamp washers dead as a dodo

Are there two pumps considering that the windscreen washers are fine ?...if so what pump does the headlamps and rear washer...?

(I did say on my intro I was a no mechanical wizard...)

The front windscreen pump is in the O/S reservoir.

The rear windscreen pump is in the  O/S reservoir

The headlamp washer pump is in the N/S reservoir.

First thing to do is check your fuses etc and then you will have to get your multi meter out and check for feed to the pumps.

there are 3 fuse boxes:

1 is inside the O/S/F footwell.

1 is beside the battery

1 is within the IPDM unit under the scuttle on the N/S/F behind the battery.

Easier to check the feeds to the pumps with the bumper off.
