Are VHS videos back in fashion again?

Random question I know but let me explain?

I am having a clear out at home, old VW books all sorts of stuff I had for years. I found a box of my old videos, proper recorded ones from a shop and everything!

Instead of just chucking them decided to put on fleabay see what happens? Well within minutes, had a few views and someone is watching already?

What's all that about?:surrender:

Obviously I still have my vinyl and cassette tapes , handy for you 350z owners  but VHS? Really?

Someone will be opening an ironic, vintage, post-modern, video rental shop for hipsters with more cash than brains

Probably a good idea, sort of thing I would do haha.

I still have a portable typewriter maybe I should go to the park and start typing! Hypsteronic eh.

Stan,

I think that the attraction of VHS videos is that they can be transferred to DVD or converted to a digital video format that you can play on your PC, Tablet or Phone.

It did cross my mind, you can buy the kit cheap enough. I still have a video recorder and kept 2 blank tapes back just in case (why no idea!):bangin:

Still I am mister retro but videos are maybe even too cool for me.

Man, I had forgotten about having 10th generation copies of "research material", usually German, dubbed over with hilariously bad voice-over and having to spend ages adjusting the tracking.

Knowsit, it always went fuzzy on the money shot due to constant rewind and fast forwarding action too

There was a Color Climax compilation doing the rounds when I was about 13 including "Black Hammer", "Hot Tongue Salad" and "Sexy Blackmail", we still use cheesy quotes originating from that vid to this day

A few years back charity shops and places wouldnt even take VHS tapes as worthless when you can buy DVD`s for a quid.

I did have a USB device I used once to transfer some of my home movies to .avi on my PC, worked quite well.

yeah worked in YMCA. We had to just send them away. Huge bags of tapes. The dvds and ps2/3 games became the norm as far back as 2011.

Those were the days.

VHS. No internet. Hours browsing the shelves of privately owned and ran video rental shops. Obscure films you'd never heard of.

It's quite sad really that no generation will ever experience that again.

My local video shop rented out Megadrive and SNES games, too. £1.50 for 24hr and as a kid, I couldn't afford the £40 that games cost.

I'd rent Desert Strike repeatedly. Someone else who rented it kindly wrote a code in the manual. TLJJOAQ. Still remember it.

I remember I desperately wanted jungle strike. I saved for ages and got a WHSmiths voucher given to me and I got it and absolutely hammered it.

There were a few places locally. Some in walking distance, others, I'd have to talk one of my parents into driving me to. The best one was called A and B Video. Like Alladins cave. Until the owner decided to knock down a supporting wall. I heard one person bought out the whole stock.

Anyway, that all went away with my childhood and I moved onto PC gaming circa 1995 when my dad bought me a Packard Bell Pentium 60 for educational purposes, I told him. Ha. I learned lots playing C&C and Space Hulk Vengeance Of The Blood Angel's.

Was insane how fast technology exploded back then. From 486 to 350MHZ Pentium 2 in 2 years and the advent of 3DFX cards.

Nice trip down memory lane there.

Haha nice write up.

If you ever go the national museum of Scotland in Edinburgh and they have a tech section in the too floor. Just looking at phones and mobiles, I point out to my daughter (9) all the phones I have owned!! Then the computer section too, I feel really bleeding old. Massive texh expansion from the 80s/90s.

Vhs might have gone but cassette tapes are back . Obviously hipster kids keeping them going. I still have all of my mix tapes etc and of course if you have a 350z you can still play them haha!

I got my mate into old school film cameras now he doesn't bother with digital! Analogue is still better in some ways its just got soul.

I've still got some recorded TV films on VHS. When Christmas TV was decent and you recorded everything in long play. Cutting out the adverts by pressing pause.

The adverts, if watched now, all come flooding back.

Remember the Polaroid VHS adverts?

"Re-record, not fade away!"

Everyone had that friend who was the porn meister who'd lend out his dads grot tapes.

"Hot coiffeur" was a particularly good one. About a woman who has a new job in a hair salon, who spends the whole day with her mind in the gutter.

That was the scotch VHS tape advert. Some cracking adverts back then. I remember the toshiba computer one where the kid wants a computer and his dads saying  dont get that one as it will be obsolute within a year and the kids assures his dad it wont be. Needless to say in reality the toshiba computer tanked.

I used to like the Russ Abbot & Des o Conner hamlet adverts, they were pretty funny. Oh and the Harp lager advert with Lionel Blair.

Those were the days!

Well, I'm half Scottish! Only right I return home once in a while. Last time I went to Edinburgh was maybe 5 years ago with my ex for the Xmas markets. They were fantastic.

I never knew there was a museum there so, I'll definitely look it up.

I  need to get a kilt in my class colours and pattern. Johnstone Clan.

The motto is "Never not ready".

"A powerful Border clan which held the central lands of Annandale. The name Gilbert Johnstone appears after 1194. Wautier Jonesone of Berwickshire rendered homage to Edward I of England in 1296, and there is a tradition that it was the Johnstone Chief who warned Robert the Bruce that his life was in danger from Edward I, sending him a sign to flee from the English Court.  His descendant was appointed Warden of the Western Marches in 1381"

"

Back to VHS and adverts..that's the one, Scotch. With the Skeleton and his dog.

I have some Krypton Factor type, outdoors challenge called Interceptor, hosted by Anabel Croft. Some "You Bet!" Episodes, some Wish You Were Here episodes.

TV today is so cheap in comparison.

PS, Hot Coiffeur 1993 is available on X Hamster!

Another plus for the Edinburgh museum, we looked around it once and its pretty interesting. I remember the technology section well. It was also free to get in if I remember correctly. (well, you give them a donation).

Anyone remember Howards Way? I have the boxset of that on DVD. I remember growing up watching it, amazed at the brand spanking new 1987 Metro Turbo, mk1 golf convertable, and all those other late 80`s cars which were in it.

Yes free entry to all the museum's up there. Its worth a visit.

Howard's way!! Good grief thats a blast from the past!  I didn't watch it but remember it.

Funny when you see that or Bergerac or Lovejoy all those kinds of programmes on rerun freeview with the cars looking really weedy by todays standards. I do miss the Jam Sandwich cop cars rather than the Amercianized current ones. I.e in case you are really thick, we put a strap line on the side to tell you what we do! Even the CSI vans, ffs all because of a TV series.....

I was watching an episode of The Bill a while back, think it was Series 1 or Series 2.

A kid got taken from school so CID go to investigate, Mike Dashwood is speaking to the Headteacher in her office with the kids best friend in there too ........ and they are both smoking ciggies! In a school with a 6 year old present!

Some of the casual racism and sexism is amazing too, we have actually come a long way believe it or not.

Exactly a lot of bad stuff has gone thankfully, well mostly, instead we have trial by social media, and Ronald MacDonald running a large country across the pond and another clown wanting to be PM in this country!

  • 2 weeks later...

See I don’t disagree with the science of analogue recordings, but I’ve back to backed on some seriously expensive hifi kit Dark Side Of The Moon vinyl vs CD, and the CD sounded much better to my ears. I suspect this is more down to what I’m used to than anything, though.

That said, VHS looks bloody awful compared with BD unless you’re very myopic

I remember when you were allowed to smoke in offices! Cant even imagine that these days. You`d be sitting there and a bloke would just spark up and puff away. Didnt even hang out of the window whilst doing it.
