Nigeria

Just looking at the news about Nigerian elections on BBC. I lived there for 4 years late seventies/early eighties. The  news reporter was in Maiduguri where Boko Haram are terrorising the population. I worked on the airport construction there for two years and previously for two years on the airport construction in Yola ... good times back then but I'm very glad I'm not there now ...

I lived there from 1985 to 1996. In Lagos. Apart from the odd riot, police tanks and military police, protests against the corrupt military leaders, civil unrest now and again. It was fine. My aunt lives in Abuja and the worst that happens there is people stealing drain covers to make money. During election times its best to not travel till the dust has settled.

I remember as a kid I used to laugh at news reports from CNN and the way they pronounced locals names.

Would I live there, Yes with a lot of money obviously and improved street smarts. Its a playground for the rich. Just stay away from the North. Who to be honest are very different people to the south. Religion and Language play a part in the divide.

Lagos is just as international as any other city

Interesting ... the Babangida era ... Abuja was just starting to be built when I was there ... are you Yoruba ?

yep. I was there during the 90s. Military rule. So military police were common. It wasnt unusual to see tanks in the streets and police checkpoints.

Abuja was better placed as Lagos was beginning to become overcongested and population was at the brim. Infrastructure not very good. Power management not the best.

I actually know what tear gas feels like. Aside from the negatives like crime , corruption etc it was okay. Just have to be wise.

Although in my opinion I think the north is an entirely different issue. They probably feel they arent reaping the benefits like the south. Its a muslim majority and im not sure the government have control of it.

You have influences from the arab world funding boko haram. Some say Al-Qaida, al shabaab and many others are involved to disrupt the country.

Nigeria is just like many other countries. I wouldn't go to certain areas in this country either. In London too.

Problem with Nigeria is a lot gets promised at election time and hardly ever gets delivered. They have these "forever" projects where the money just gets eaten up. Eko Atlantic is a good example. They promised a monorail going from the islands to the mainland still not done.

Infrastructure is a big thing that needs improvement. You dont need the chinese taking over the country. These things can be done internally. I can understand railway projects needing to be outsourced.

What annoys me is government ministers like "dino melaye" driving around in his Ferrari with police escort to his mansion yet people still live on £1 a week.

Which position is paying Ferrari/Mansion money. Some are paid higher than Theresa May yet do a fifth of the work while stealing more money......

Nigeria has potential that im afraid to say will never be met due to the need to be greedy, showoff and corrupt. A damn shame when you look at how far Singapore, UAE and Malaysia have come in comparison. Many Nigerians living in those countries.

UAE get an idea, put it to fruition and complete. Nigeria, plan, talk, plan, decide on budget, meeting, money goes missing, replan money doesnt come, back to square one, when it finally gets going its beyond budget and gets put on hold indefinitely.

Then you got a guy like Mr Innoson Motors, trying to spread public transport and make buses, trucks and cars people can use locally and support the economy getting arrested ........."enemies of progress"
