Brexit again

It is monumentally ironic that the Member State planning to leave the EU because they want to make their own decisions, can't take any decision on leaving the EU :headhurt:

If one thing has been proven by Brexit it is that we consistently vote in a shower of tossers whether they be right or left wing.

Of course.

They get into power through friends and friends of friends. If your parents know/knew the right people and you're loaded, the only other thing you need is to be in the right place at the right time and you're in.

"Am I ANY GOOD at all this?! God no my dear, I'm simply one of the old boys club"

But we vote for them time and time again. There’s always independents running at GEs, but people only ever vote for the colour their parents did because either they hate communism, they hate Thatcher, or they hate any other country in the UK.

No-one ever stops to look at what their particular candidate is actually like: Their record, their background, their own policies. They simply vote for the party with the most charismatic leader. Tbh, we get what we deserve.

Who knows, maybe this will be the wake up call a lot of people needed to limit the usual:

"We hated Thatcher we will never vote Tory here"

"we hated Blair we will never vote Labour here"

Its going to be interesting to see the next GE, parties may be shooting themselves in the foot if they field an outspoken remain MP in a majority leave area and visa versa.

No more Anna Soubry for me since she went independent earlier! she was only getting elected due to representing Tory

With our setup, ultimately, there’s only two choices; choose to move capital from poor to rich, or, to move capital from rich to poor.

The first one only leaves a voter with one voting choice, so it’s a simple ‘choice’.

The second one has more options on the face of it, but in reality all there is to choose between is either the party whose policies you prefer, or a tactical vote. A tactical vote option will vary depending on the strength of the seat incumbent and the second place party in the constituency. Occasionally this voter’s preference will also be tactically powerful, and you’ll be in the luxurious position of voting for what you believe in and making a difference to the outcome, but this is only a tiny fraction of the electorate.

If the last few years have shown us anything, the two party system can’t seem to get much done, unless the governing majority is of such a size that it can tolerate a few of its own MPs who will vote against party lines. People ridicule PR because it never leads to a clear majority, but it does have the advantage of different parties having to actually cooperate on things to get anything done. The horse trading that comes with that is abhorrent to some, but it does at least present the opportunity for collaboration, and it means everyone’s vote counts for something.

Are you going actually going to waste your time voting for anything ever again??

The whole Brexit thing has shown everyone how selfish and pointless the whole political system is.

Every single MP just care about how they can get themselves to the top job, and will lie/back stab anyone and everyone along the way. None of them care about the country, let alone what their constituents want.

At least with Putin and Kim you know what your getting.

Holy thread revival :teeth:

whats the thoughts now that we've left, good bad indifferent?  Anyone still entrenched in their support/opposition, is it a good thing, given what is understood now, is Irish unification and Scottish independence inevitable?

Will Covid make the difference, will Covid produce the excuse,  will Covid give cover, will Covid be in play?

Will @Jetpilot come back and vociferously defend the position?  Will anyone explain the “extra” freedoms, will we ever be the same?

Will IDS read anything, will Priti Patel order the Navy to sink refugee boats, without the MOD approval?

Do we believe that Boris Johnson is the leader he claimed to be?  Do we believe he has done a good job?

Was it right to open the pubs before schools, was it right that the furlough scheme is working?

Do we think that business premises should get government support as they are now, undoubtedly under pressure from those that work from home?

Can the people of Kent cope with vast lorry parks?  Can the cope with independence before sovereign nations?

just asking

Nothing has changed because of Covid19. Ironically it’s probably done us a favour, as we’re now used to a crashed economy and proper leaving the EU post-transition won’t make a lot of difference now.

Independence for other countries is as far away as it’s ever been, in my eyes. There’s no money to do anything, and ultimately no one wants to make themselves poorer when they’re already skint.

Boris has done fine, not outstanding but I’m not sure anyone else would’ve done much better. They’d simply have made different mistakes. I do like Kier Starmer though, supports publicly the sensible decisions rather than just mock because he’s on the opposite side of the commons.

We've not left yet. Only on paper but in reality nothing has changed yet and nothing will, at least until end of December. We should probably revisit this thread again in 2021 when we can actually have a discussion around customs as they are, prices, traffic, and whatever else.

All that's happened so far is Covid and politicians trying to get cheap points with "tough stance" on negotiations, that's about it.

Yes, I agree with that.  I’m trying to gauge the general feeling amongst those that broadly supported this nonsense.
