350z specialist - clutch / gearbox

Recommended Posts

Hey all,

Looking for a specialist to try and identify whether a noise is clutch or gearbox and whether it means replacing things. Any suggestions?

I'm South West area, Taunton. If I need to travel further afield to somewhere like HDev I will, but if anybody can recommend somewhere closer to home it would be appreciated, anywhere within 50 to 75 miles.

No slipping that I've noticed, it's just a whirring type noise that started off quiet and seems to have increased in amplitude over a few months. It's not super loud but is noticeable.

Had the car for 18 months so not super new owner.

I'll try and get a good recording this evening, although phones are dubious when it comes to sound recording. Hopefully it will give an idea.

Noise from interior followed by noise from exterior. When it gets quieter that's me pushing the clutch pedal in. When releasing it there's a bit of a clunk and then the whirring in neutral, I think this is exacerbated by the fact I have a poly transmission mount. I'll be switching back to a softer mount hopefully this week to see impact.

Sounds like the flywheel to me. They're noisy anyway !

You should hear my one (JWT single mass) - its like a cement mixer

A clunk could be the throw-out bearing I guess, and for sure more noise would be present from a transmission mount like that. Once again my car does it as all of the mounts in the drive-line have been uprated.

That's somewhat reassuring, fingers crossed it is dmf flywheel. I can justify flywheel and clutch change (would move to smf myself), but I'd have to consider my options if it were a gearbox issue as that's a lot of added expense!

Maybe find out Friday, getting a gearbox specialist place to have a look / listen.

Don't worry, I've not forgotten that Alex! =) I have it booked in with a place that specialise in transmissions to hopefully confirm diagnosis; I'm hoping for the best but expecting the worst. I'm guessing it's pretty hard to tell for sure without dropping the damn thing and having a poke, by which time you might as well start replacing things!

Following on from the previous thread, now I have listened to the vids it sounds exactly the same as mine. Keep us posted as I would like to know exactly what it is, as I guessed it was a noisy bearing along the gearbox shaft

I'll let you know what they say, Alex thinks it's that too but he recommend I try and get to see a specialist for someone to have a hands on with it before committing to any repairs.

I had my gearbox rebuilt by Sly at Kaizer a few months ago, they did a great job and were clear with what was wrong in my case (baulk rings, lost 5th and nearly reverse).

Hopefully it's not gearbox apart time for you but...

If you end up going down that route, I can give 2 thumbs up for them :thumbs:

Well specialist I have taken it to thinks it's gearbox judging by noise and drive =/ vaguely expected but hoped it wouldn't be. However, they said they can't repair it for some reason, something about not being able to open it? Said only option was second hand or main dealer. Given that you had yours repaired that's clearly not the case.

Also whatever it may be, it's definitely worse after 100 miles of motorway driving, and I can hear noises/frequencies that didn't exist before at certain revs in certain gears when going onto or coming off of power.

Zmanalex knows zeds inside and out, as do Kaiser Motors. You've had a transmission specialist look into it, maybe the next step is to let a performance nissan expert look into it? There are other traders on these forums in the south too, though I believe the best of the rest are more focused on modifications and performance than maintenance (shoutout to Horsham who tuned my zed!). I don't know if the others would go as far as rebuilding a gearbox but I know Kaizer would. Someone might correct me on this :) (we are lucky to have excellent trader support on these forums).

So I'll give another thumbs up for http://kaizermotor.co.uk, they might be over 4 hrs away from you but they are expert nissan mechanics with a focus on the performance cars and an hourly rate that's very reasonable.

Have a chat with them, by all means point out your post vid as Sly is on these forums. I'm sure they will help you run through your options.

Thx @HiddenWomble, yes the next step is to consider my options as far as replacement or recon is concerned, given the recommendations I may be in touch with Kaizer Motors next week.

Are recondition / rebuild a good option? If I can get a replacement gearbox off of a low mileage Z wouldn't that be better long term (albeit more expensive)?  I don't know a great deal but I'd not want to fix my existing gearbox if it still left it more prone to dying in future than a low miles one. I'm coming from a place of ignorance regarding gearboxes so just trying to establish the facts =)
