OBX Individual Throttle Bodies

Recommended Posts

For many reasons already discussed in my  DIY individual throttle body thread the project has been abandoned and as per the title I'm installing OBX individual Throttle bodies which arrived wednesday 3 days from america not bad

These have had a lot of bad press but strangley I've not come across anyone who has actually fitted them it's all hearsay. Jenvey are understandably upset as they appear to be a direct copy of their setup so I can see their point

after unpacking them and having a good look some of the criticism is definatley fair the quality of the castings and  machining of them is not up to jenvey standards and there are no instructions whatsoever not that I would have read them I'm a man god damn it.

The throttle bodies look good and the parts supplied quite comprehensive if I paid jenvey money for them they would go back but I didn't I paid a third of that

So out with the old

IMG_20180421_095502.jpg.98902b352cd12ff2c97d0a77d08d5308.jpg

So now I can see what it fits like

IMG_20180421_103351.jpg.348dbedc8d0221924c25e50d57367234.jpg

good so far that is untill you fit a throttle body and velocity stack anyway

there is no picture of this yet as not a single one fitted. with a standard 350Z rocker cover the filler would be in the way luckily I've already changed mine as I already had this problem with first ITB setup I had

this one is from an Elgrande I believe, despite that I still had to modify the cap I made, cut off and blank the front breather pipes and all of the brackets the injector loom fixes to

and clearance is still tight

the other thing I've had to do is reroute some cables, nothing too drastic (yet)

I've also drilled and tapped the manifolds for the vaccume takeoff neither the OBX or jenvey come with this pre-drilled an tapped

Hopefully I will get a bit more done tomorrow

A lot of my day has been spent doing things obx should have done properly tapping holes through that were only partially done countersinking some holes properly etc mostly minor stuff but it still had to be done and still took time also you can't bolt it all together on the bench and then fit it, everything has to be built on the engine due to clearancesbeing so thight.

so here is my days progress

So the next problem (I'm sure it won't be the last) is the fuel rails' I dropped some injectors in tonight and thought to myself that looks a little tight

IMG_20180423_163759.jpg.5e4ba9d3152f9c3f89a576f3fb87dee8.jpg

it doesn't matter which way around you put the injectors or the supplied fuel rails they either sit on top of the injector connector for the other bank or just push the injector over at an angle unless the injectors were about an inch longer these fuel rails would never fit

IMG_20180423_163931.jpg.038ff1621d17f79d580f01196dce7a7a.jpg

IMG_20180423_163911.jpg.73438795af3c8f0301bfcb7ce259c4df.jpg

luckily I have a spare set of standard fuel rails that I've started modifying to fit

IMG_20180423_195602.jpg.e93399429c4dc9d78fa2dab4bbbef2a0.jpg

even though I expected a certain amount of problems that doesn't mean it's acceptable and I have got onto the supplier about the various issues especially as they suggest that this is virtually a bolt on kit

I'll hope they fix some issues you are talking about. Maybe then they can sell some itb's to less smart/handy people like u, for instance me :p

It's highly unlikely that they will fix anything but if I document the problems and fixes for them here you can at least make an informed decision as to weather you want to give it a try none of the issues are major or insummountable some drilling and tapping and a tiny bit of welding for the fuel rails

:)

Such a disappointment when supposedly 'engineered' kit has so obvious a flaw - I'm sure you were tempted to take the rails back to OBX in person and beat the designer with them till they fit properly :bangin:

Have you got any other injectors that are longer, to help with the clearance?

no they would have to be huge

anyway it doesn't matter the modified ones are nearly ready to go, and  the chinese are usually so good at copying other peoples work

Any updates yet? Can't wait to hear the beast growl again.

yes it started first turn of the key about an hour ago

then the heavens opened up so I'm sitting here in my pants looking like a drowned rat but smiling like this :teeth:

The suppliers /manufacturers were useless with the issues apparently I don't know what I'm talking about

I machined a pulley to go onto the throttle servo so it's all cable operated for now anyway also had to blank another one of the breathers on the rocker cover

IMG_20180428_125842.jpg.58b66196db298b9e23461bfb3abca5cc.jpg

IMG_20180428_171704.jpg.d858e5598638d14b67f4252ac6476603.jpg

I cut and welded the standard steel fuel rails to fit and strangely they came out similar to the Jenvey ones so Jenvey don't know what they're talking about either

IMG_20180502_163159.jpg.f1df4bfc9f0ee598050e3a40e5166de5.jpg

and completely re-did the fuel system and vacuum setup much neater

IMG_20180502_163149.jpg.3cf54e00a8787036467a585d72d574a3.jpg

IMG_20180502_163206.jpg.a1e75ed0a765e33c3e5f6f13e2d65ea1.jpg

and there you go just lots of tinkering now to make it run right oh and sort out air filters

:)

So you buy a kit that's ready to go and still come up with an excuse to engineer some improvements ..............

Well done that man

Looks good mate :)

yea that "kit that's ready to go " bit is a bit misleading but if anyone feels the urge to try it it's not too bad especially if you go over to a cable throttle pedal setup then the only other problems are the passenger side rocker cover the breather pipes and the fuel rails other than that it's feasible with a set of drills and taps and a lot of patience

another one of those small issues came up that turned into an all day job, the fuel rails were wet where I welded them so i took them off and ground them back to try again turns out the weld is porous I'm guessing the rails were brazed originally even though I ground them back to bare metal I had the exact same problem again  not sure if it's impurities in the metal or what but I can't be arsed to do it again.

So plan b or c I can't remember anyway the fuel rails that were supplied by OBX have been on a major diet with the aid of my milling machine and a finger sander and now fit just.

I'll post up a couple of pictures when I get a chance also I've started on the air filters

Why did you not sell this rare metal to cover the cost of new rails??

Looks mega!! Do you remove the gauge after set up or leave it for show as I use too? After a while of being fitted it'll soon go out of calibration as they are meant to be fitted, used for set up then removed.
