Drifting setup

Right I decided since we have the new sub forum I’d start a post about what setups people are using. So I guess I’ll start us off.

Im still very much a newbie to this so my car is still fairly standard.

30mm lowering springs

25mm front and rear spacers

deep dish steering wheel

standard rays - have 2 extra rears to save tyre changing time

And for all the style points I have my BGW.

Is there anything you would recomend that will be night and day, I’m thinking to get a bucket seat next and then harnesses. But would I be better to spend that money elsewhere? Could I get more out of a different mod.

Its still my my daily and I don’t mind annoying but I’m not sure I’m ready for a welded diff just yet?

post your setup below

Buckets and harnesses will give you a significant control upgrade, as you’ll be able to feel what the car is doing much easier than in a regular seat, so that’s definitely something I’d be looking at if I were you. Plenty of options out there :)

Also it’s worth getting a decent geo done too, although you’ll have to compromise between a road and a drift setup to an extent. Get the basics done right first

What would you recommend geo wise? I’m reluctant to go as far as adjustable arms and stuff at the moment as I don’t think it will give me my money’s worth at my early stage.

Should i I just get a general alignment done and go from there?

As Dan has said, 30mm drop will probably take you out with the factory settings.

There is no camber adjustment on the front, however, the extra neg. camber may suit your needs.

You are limited on the rear for camber and toe adjustments.

Best to get a 4 wheel alignment done and adjust as best you can.

Find out from other drifters what their settings are and give them to your geo specialist as guidance.

Ok. I was always under the impression that a bit of negative camber on the front was good, so that’s maybe confirmed that. But how much is too much?

I don’t mind going with adjustable arms and stuff I just think I will be better served using that money for either other mods (harnesses etc) or seat time. How big of a difference would an alignment make? As long as I have had the car I have never had one done of any sort!

I work in a car dealership so I can get one done there pretty easy but am I going to get much benefit from it? Or do I need to go to a specialist?

Never had an alignment??!! Jeez, that’s shocking: Should be done annually at the minimum.

Really you want want to go to someone who can tailor the setup for you personally, but at this point even going back to OEM so that the wheels are at least pointing in the same direction would be a start.

I’m pretty sure they are pointing in the same direction why wouldn’t they be?

In terms of tailor the setup for me how would I really know what’s right for me.

As it is the car self steers pretty well and it doesn’t pull to either side at all really (a little to one side but that’s normal no?)

Ill get get it done at work then and get them to keep it as close to spec as they can for now. is there anything I can get them to do that will help at all? More front toe? less front toe?

By the way thanks for all the help :)

There's pointing and then there's pointing...  put it this way, if it's never had an alignment then I'd be absolutely amazed if it's within spec, especially after lowering. You may not feel like it's off, but you'll be amazed how much better it can feel when it's spot-on.

2 way diff

Buckets

Seat time

In that order? I'd have said buckets, seat time and then eventually a diff, but you're the expert on drifty stuff.

Also I haven't ever had an alignment

And you know this still bothers me too

If the diff ain't locking and consistent ain't much you can do drift wise lol

Diff is also £700 + fitting, bit much for your first go.  Regarding Geo, a standard setup would be fine but the more neg camber you have the better for drifty and track purposes, youll have added some when lowering.

I don't think I will every justify a 2way - might as well just weld it.

Thanks for all the advice guys :)

I don't think a 2 way diff is necessary to be honest, I've been fine with the same welded viscous diff for the last 3 years. As for a geo setup, your generally wanting the rear wheels as straight as possible, ie 0 deg toe and camber. For the front, camber around -2 to -3 degrees but this can't be adjusted without arms. I run the front toe at 0.2 degrees toe out as it makes the steering response really fast but a bit rubbish on roads at high speed as you hit bumps and it pulls you all over the road so if your keeping it as a road car I'd say 0 degree toe or 0.1 at most. Just to note tho, my alignment hasn't been done in about 2 years and is pretty shocking atm but still drifts haha. Tein steering arms are a good cheap upgrade aswell but not entirely essential. Gives you enough steering lock

Right I never managed to get an alignment. guessing it should be alright for what i will be capable of. Massive shout out ot @The Chubby Ninja for the loaner wheels.

I managed to get my seat in and fitted but not harnesses i guessed that would be better than the slidey leather seats.

all in i think im good to go.

heres hoping :D
