I'd love one, but you'd need to be brave. Then again, it's not like the GT-R is particularly cheap to run either, so maybe not an issue? Certainly the GT has immense presence.

I'd get something like a Csl M3 or Whale tail sierra/escort cosworth or even a mint Mk1 or 2 Escort Mexico so much more enjoyable than new stuff with genuine excitement every time you get in it and turn the key with performance levels that can be enjoyed and exploited! 

 

If it had to be new then I do think, as has been suggested, that the new Lotus Exige is far more exciting than most others. I know some will take offense and shoot me down here but for your budget you can't buy the 911 you'd want, I'd bet you'll be disappointed after the novelty has worn off. 

 

I would say with that much to choose from, explore every avenue and go and drive EVERYTHING! I'm sure you'll know when you drive it what you want

Yeah would be a higher miler Csl but in a way that means using it feels better. My mate has a Csl and it is a proper event going out in at, the gearbox to be fair feels very dated but that noise at 8,000rpm soon makes you forgive it!

My money is towards a nice Lotus Exige, but the V6 variant. Try and strive for the 350 as it's an updated version of the S, or better yet, a 380 :D
Good luck with the search, I had a similar dilemma earlier this year and ended up with the Nismo. Was the best " on paper" buy. Brand new car, fit and finish was very good. E92 M3 was too old, Mustang was too crap ( bad fit, driving felt like a sponge ) and Cayman was out of reach for my budget ( wanted a newer one )
The Lotus just ooozes road presence, at the cost of comfort and maybe the interior isn't the most plush!

After spending the last year or so in a Vx you cannot argue the case the Exige will be the most superb driving experience out of anything mentioned, utterly wasted on the road though and not really that pleasant a place to be, spartan at best, so unless you plan on tracking you will really be missing out on all upsides of ownership.

 

Whats is the intention for the car/driving op?

yep its a fair point - I just worry that the novelty of a 911 would wear off after a few months and its a bit too practical? however i'm off tomorrow to look at some as they're awesome none the less! :D

Not really a fan of them TBH - i'd like to stay away from Hot Hatch type cars, plus prefer 2 seater.

I had not considered Lotus - having looked online and numerous videos etc of the Exige 350 I am really really excited about seeing this car in the flesh, off to Lotus Silverstone tomorrow to check it out as it looks AWESOME, would appreciate your opinion on them and what you did and didn't love it about it

I really fancy something new rather then old but if I were looking at older cars, that would be exactly the direction i'd be heading in.

I am off to see them tomorrow, the 350 sport. 380 would be too much of a stretch. I'm not concerned about the lack of comfort and luxuries, in-fact I prefer it like that as this is a second car to enjoy in evenings, weekends etc and the odd commute to the train station. really excited about the prospect and just hope i'm not let down. My one concern is that they are quite small... and a bit feminine in that sense (like an mx5) :lol:

If I head down this route i'll for sure start looking into track days etc (I used to work part time at weekends as a lap day instructor when I was 17, great fun! so I'm not a complete novice). 

 

The main intention is to put a smile on my face, enjoy the process of going from a to b (nomatter where that is), bring some theater to the driving experience and drive something that is rare, loud, different and isn't badge snob related. 

 

All that said, i'll be looking at a Cayman GTS too

Well the Lotus ticks all those boxes by the barrel load :) but please track it :)

I think my 50k would go somewhere like that after a gtr. 

 

But the lotus is an awesome car a lad has had on a few of our trips and the way it gets out the traps is awesome.

A few bits on it are a bit rover like tho if you know what I mean.

Wing mirrors and switches etc

Have to say, I agree with this 1000%.

 

Is an Elise-chassis car the most sensible thing ever? No. It'll squeak, it'll leak, it'll rattle, you'll never hear the stereo and it'll ice up on the inside. However, every single journey you do will be utterly memorable and it'll teach you more about driving and feedback than anything this side of a Caterham. The Elises are second only to probably TVRs in terms of friendliness in their car community, and everyone you see on the road will give you wave. My 911 was my favourite car, but I have more memories of my VXR220 in 18 months than I do of 4 years in the Porker.

 

Buy the right one and you could run it for a year then sell it on, and not lose a penny. Tbh you don't need the big bucks, a V6 Exige is a monster but on the roads that matter an S2 111R with the 'Yota 2ZZ lump is just as quick, and more importantly just as much fun. If you want pretty much zero depreciation then an S2 Elise or Exige with that engine will see you right.

Novelty wear off? Never. Took me a year to get to grips with the dynamics of a rear engined car, then the next three to get used to just how early you could put the throttle down in the corners :lol:

 

Nothing else out there is rear engined and with a flat six. That novelty never gets dull :)

Funny how people view things differently, most of us a single car owners (fun cars) have to carefully scrutinise what is going to tick the most boxes so a lot of times we are making sacrifices, better on track, lack of comfort on the road etc.

 

I am working for a dude at the moment who's three car garage consists of a 911 Turbo S, 458 Spyder and AM DBS (with the reg A V12 DBS) ;) He is a bit younger than me and happy to chat cars, i asked which his favourite was, well it was the DBS which surprised me. The 911 to him was just an engineering marvel, its quicker, comfier and stops better than all the others, but because of that for him its just too competent and lacks the character of the others, he says the 458 is just epic but scares the sh*t out of him as he knows it could bite back any minute. So the DBS to him just is just the most characterful, you dont have to be going at warp speed to revel in the experience, it ouzes character and is an experience just driving down to town for example, it is the one car he would keep if he had to decide, its the cheapest too, go figure, sometimes the "best" car isnt always the "best" car.

Hi Guys - update on the kind of successful day. 

 

Lotus Silverstone - the Exige s 350 is an awesome car, unquestionably. I was pleasantly surprised as to how comfortable it was to drive! I didn't get much chance to push the car as it was extremely greasy on the roads but from what I did experience, I was very very impressed and certainly ticks the boxes! ps. I can't believe that they only make 300 cars a year! total. 

 

Porsche Silverstone - terrible experience, the sales guys were too busy to speak to me as they were all sat at their computers in the sales office...  (make of that what you wish), the receptionist tried her best to get one of them to serve me, but they didn't bother. I subsequently called Reading Porsche and they were much much friendlier - he has just sent me the details for this which seems interesting ! http://locator.porsche.com/ipl-customer/ipl/details/details.ipl?md5=ac841964ee58533ae8b3ffe4abb533cf&url=uk - I am going to test drive this and the Cayman S sometime in the next couple of weeks. The price of the car however is firmly in the new GTR territory. 

 

Nissan Oxford - unwilling to let me come down to test drive the GTR they had in stock is its an 17 plate and I was at the time, asking for a 2-3 year old one. 

 

As it currently stands, its down to the Exige 350, 911 (of some variant) or GTR. Exciting times ahead.

A mate of mine had one, and while he liked it, he chopped it in pretty quickly, he said it didnt feel enough like a road car or was fast enough as a track car for him, I think his experience was tainted by the first car they delivered going badly wrong enough times for them to swap it for another one. 
Replaced it with a 991 Turbo which he loved and now has a Huracan after the dealer that sold him the 991 didnt return calls to buy another one ........ you think youd at least send a txt or something :lol:
