Another - what would you get for 30-50k post.

Hi guys,

I was told today that my 370z nismo is beyond repair, so the hunt for a new car will be underway in the new year. As it currently stands i'd have around £30k cash  for a car and would consider finance for  the right car. up to around 50k total.

As you're all petrolheads and drive z's, we all like "drivers cars" and aren't fussed about badges. . . i'd like your opinions.

My current list of options in order of preference.

1. GTR

2. 911

3. M2

All very different cars obviously. I have been reading up on GTR's and the maintenance/running costs worries me slightly. seems to be circa £300pm for litchfield warranty, plus spreading service costs over the 12 months.

This is bit of a mind dump on you all but i'd really appreciate your wacky and wonderful suggestions.

I would prefer a 2 seater, doesn't need to be super practical, I like something that has road presence (this puts me off the 911 and m2 slightly) and it must be different. This is why i loved my Nismo so much as it ticked all the boxes for sub 40k new. Also, i'm not keen on cars that are 6+ years old

Not even close, 911 wins for me. Just as much road prescence as a GT-R, just in a different way.

That said, I'd be trying a Cayman as well on that budget. And saying that still, try as much as you can, you might be surprised at what tickles your fancy. AMV8 wouldn't be as nimble, but it would certainly stir the soul. Or an R8 could tick all boxes.

Age is nothing, buy on condition and that applies equally amongst all the cars you've mentioned. I wouldn't even look at an M2 if a GT-R was on the cards though, competent but not exactly thrilling if it's remotely close to the 240 when sat inside.

I think you know my opinion so I'll just reiterate

911

you'll get a nice 997.2 for that budget

I have not spent much time looking into the 997 yet, common faults, running costs etc. However I have always liked 911's, the fact that they have bottomed out in price some what and are always desirable is also v appealing. It may be a stretch to get one but seems like a better investment than an M2 for example. Would love to get your view/suggestions on what to look for Hugh.

The only thing that is deterring me from really considering them is that I may look bit of a plonker in it as i'm still relatively young and they're wrongly perceived as an "old mans car"... but then again, who cares. :)

You have to try the GTR - £40k - £45k should get you a nice one.

a GTR has always been my "dream car", I like the more "muscle" look of a GTR as they're brash, in your face and IMO demonstrate to the world that you live by your own rules, but maybe i'm reading too much into that . The running costs of GTR's worry me, also the fact that you look at them for sale, and all of a sudden you're telling yourself you must have a 2012 model as a minimum, a stage 4 litchfield and only in black. This takes it from a 45-50k car to 55-60 and something i can't afford. Maybe I should keep it a dream until I can save to buy one new.

Lotus Evora as a wildcard

Very capable cars and always glance twice when I see them on the road, but just not enough road presence for me, seem to small and also quite "feminine". should I get the flame suit out the wardrobe  - good suggestion but just not for me.

Interesting you said AMV8 Dan, been looking at the prices for those too - I still think they look great, a V8 is awesome, nice road presence, and why not try an Aston! I'll certainly have this on my list. Again, not looked much into running costs etc yet.

M2 seems like a very capable car, however they don't excite me in the same way as the others do. Plus i've never been a huge BMW/Merc fan, no matter the car. In the same way i'd never really entertain an R8.

Thanks for the help guys. I'm sure this won't be a quick process so I intend to try as much cars as I can.

Well as a former fellow Nismo owner I would say give the A45 AMG a whirl. Very different obviously but great fun and blisteringly quick. Since it doesn't really meet your criteria though, how about a 981 Cayman GTS or Evora 400?

Love this BBK. Looks a little dated now but who cares, really nice looking car IMO. Certainly on the list.

Only thought I have is that for 55k that's well into good GTR money so I'd really need to decide which way I want to go with my car.

I am hoping to have a similar budget spring next year and you seem to echo my thoughts. A GTR is/was/maybe on my list but like you i am concerned with costs, i came to the conclusion the only way i would buy a gtr is through a specialist with a comprehensive warranty, just in case.

Like you i have absolutely no interest in an R8, its an RS4 in a dress to me, a dull dress at that and although i have a hankering for the A45AMG there is no way i would spend £40k on one and that goes the same for a 718 Gayman, Evora or any M car.

My only other 40k option was an Ultima GTR, however, i can totally see that wont appeal to many though.

40k - 50k should get you a hell of a car, no matter what you go for though, enjoy the choice :)

The arse is about to fall out of S/H M2 values as theres a CS and an LCI on the way, its rumoured there will be a CSL next year too. F80 M3 values are also suffering badly at the moment - £35K for a £60K motor after 2 years is bargainous.

Id buy a 981 Cayman though, ticks all the boxes, will hold its money well and is a genuinely awesome car to drive, far, far better than a 370 IMO.
