50mph'ish stone impact cracked my windscreen this afternoon. Will ring the insurance company tomorrow and see what the deal is but has anyone had any issues getting it replaced due to the age of the cars??

Just had a cracked windscreen on my GT-R and got my insurance company to confirm in writing that replacement under my policy would not effect my NCD or premium.

The only issue that I had was that Autoglass wanted to fit an after market Pilkington glass, however I again contacted my insurance company and asked them for a Genuine NIssan OEM glass and that all I wanted was my car restored to its original pre accident condition.

I also asked for a genuine OEM glass moulding and genuine OEM gel pads for the rain sensitive wipers and auto headlights, and again they agreed.

Job not done yet as there was a delay with the parts, but expecting it done within the next 5 days.

I'm guessing that it's a little easier to get hold of GT-R glass as they're still making them or at least not as old for the older models. Hope I can get some genuine Nissan glass and surrounds otherwise I'll just have to settle for whatever they can get hold of. Luckily(?!) my windscreen was already scratched on the opposite side from the previous owner not replacing windscreen wipers regularly enough so will get rid of that!!

Nissan still supply windscreens for the 350Z, however due to the age of the car you may have to settle for a Pilkington.

Your policy will probably state that all you have to do is contact Autoglass direct, and pay them your £75.00 excess.

When my rear glass had to be replaced the glass wasn't an issue but the seals were, had to wait around 3 weeks for these as there weren't any in the country.

I'm changing my windscreen in a months time as part as a overall on the car as the seals got damaged when removing the roof wrap. Plus when the suns shining it's terrible for little chips in the glass, fortunately a mate of mine works for a windscreen company and can sort it all for me through insurance, So I'll get the OEM glass and seals pre-ordered.

I renewed my insurance a few weeks back Hugh and they confirmed it wouldn't affect my NCB plus they only charge £60, cheapest I've ever had windscreen cover

Did you have to declare the replacement glass as a no fault claim James ?

You will need to order a top exterior rubber trim from Nissan, no company replaces it. They just try to refit it. Also the plastic 'A' pillar trim has about 9 or so screws hidden under the rubber door seal. It does NOT just pull off!!!And the windscreen wipers come off as does the plastic trims between the battery covers and the screen. The 'B' pillar does just pop off, but the clips are brittle, and there is a small rubber grommet that might just fall out.Had mine replaced on my old 350 back in 2014. Had to wait nearly three weeks for them to source a screen back then...... or more likely for a fitter who knew how to do a 350.

Don't forget the black plastic phone mic/aerial thingy behind the mirror before they cut through it removing the screen......

Thanks guys, finally got through to DirectLine who instantly directed me to AutoGlass.

I inquired about using actual Nissan glass but have been informed i would have to pay the difference and i would have to wait a minimum of 3 weeks whilst they locate or even manufacture. I also asked about the exterior rubber trim, they told me they would only refit existing and would not replace it.

For my own sanity i will remove the A & B pillars before the technician arrives so thanks for the heads up, found a relatively decent write up on the american forum so will give that a go.

They have the glass in stock and a fitter ready for Saturday, i cant wait 3 plus weeks or paying out extra so looks like this is as good as it gets.

sends chills down my spine... i'd rather drive my Z without a windscreen than let those n00bs back near it.

Purely out of interest, what was the outcome of yours? The thread went a little quiet..

Regardless, i'll be using autoglass and i will be doing a video documenting the condition of my car in all the areas people have mentioned above before they commence work.

after blood sweat and tears, and an email to all of their senior managers - they sent out a "specialist" to fixed all of the damage that was caused. It took at lot of time and complaining to get to that resolution....

  • 2 weeks later...

Well...... update time.

I requested OEM glass rather than replacement pilkinton glass. Seemed like a simple request?

They wanted to check with the insurer that they would pay the difference. (I assumed they'd pay a bit towards it and i'd foot the rest, therefore, if it was £50 more for proper Nissan glass i'd be happy to pay it)

Nearly two weeks later, 2 complaints via my insurer and 8 phone calls later I have a quote.

£850+ for Nissan glass ON TOP of what the insurer would pay (approx £200).....oh yeah and don't forget the £75 excess

Pilkington glass it is then......

Edit: And the crack is now about 12 inches long, that frost the other night didn't help! Going to look pretty at Japfest

Any ideas where i can get a rubber trim myself?

Nissan specify, in their workshop manual, that the rubber trim, rubber dam and plastic fastener should all be replaced whenever the windscreen is.

I had my windscreen replaced last year and showed them the workshop manual and insisted they replace the parts.

They agreed to pay for and change the parts and I asked to see the new parts before fitting to confirm.

You can find the workshop manual here: http://www.allcarmanuals.com/factory-service-manual-61-Nissan-350Z-Fairlady-Z-Z33.html

You'll want page 11 in section "GW".

As a side note - make sure you take pictures before they touch your car as they managed to put a nice dent in my roof when they were fitting the new windscreen with a mallet....

Took me over 6 months to get them to pay for the repair!

Hope this helps you!

Honestly, glass is glass and OEM or Pilkington it wouldn't bother me in the slightest. Anything is better than glass with a dirty great crack through it!

I've never specified OEM glass when having it changed. Granted that was only in the MR2 (didn't know better), VXR220 (likewise but was very careful with the fitting by AG) and the MX5 (too cheap to worry about). I wouldn't care about OEM glass on the BMW, it's 13 years old so anything will do.
