DB Nissan 350z GT 05'

Thought to have a pre Winter clean out of most of my cleaning products and good job one of my tar and glue remover had a fallen over, with a nice loose cap. Needless to say my travel storage bag is nice and clean now at least. 

 

Combined a couple of partially used spray detailers and tyre dressings, binned off any old sample items and nearly finished bottles. 

 

Will need to sort out my DA's kits, pads, towels, applicators and general micro fibres as I need better storage for these. 

 

Yes i have an addition, but she's worth it :blush:

They do say the first step to recovery is admitting there's a problem :lol:

 

Obviously need to build up my collection: only got snow foam, shampoo and wax. Maybe some wheel cleaner somewhere.

Few pictures of the coating applied to the RAYS prior to refitting some time ago. C4 isn't sold as being for alloys, but will chemical bond to the surface providing protection through the harsh winter months.

Round my way the council fitted rubbish LED street light replacements.

They must be 2w or something as the street looks so much gloomier.

This was years ago so I reckon like all technology things have moved on and you and Coldel are luckily getting the new stuff.

Recently had some builders in so parked on the neighbors drive for a couple of days. Almost helped to view the car as if it wasn't mind and yeah it's a great looking car if I do say so myself.

We do luckily, for first time home owners they've been unreal over the years - very fortunate. Tucked away till Spring, for the last dozen or so years ive always taken the aftermarket wheels off to fit OE over the winter months.

Just spent an hour or so reading through your whole thread, a great read! Nice to see your knowledge on detailing build up through the years! Such a clean car, first time I've seen your engine bay as well :ohmy: Looks amazing! Orange is always a great contrast with the grey. Look forward to linking back up on Sunday :thumbs:

Cheers Lewis, thank you!! The thread was always going to be more about polish than power with me as an owner :lol: Upon going to view the car, straight away could tell it was a clean car so really the upkeep has been routine stuff thankfully. The owner before me had bee over servicing it with the replacement if items, which was my gain. The DE has so much scope for engine dressing up which is great. the more modern stuff as you knowing being plastic fantastic are so bland in comparison - Bring back chucky HT leads ay.

 

This was my Almera GTi engine bay and it was my daily driver.

Annual service carried out while in lockdown, 13 months since the last service however it's normally done every March - so today has brought it back into line.

For a daily it's tidy, a basic oil change takes me ages and I'm always busy cleaning and having a good poke round underneath. Servicing and routine maintenance, I've luckily always done myself since owning my first car almost 20yrs ago as I enjoy it. Plus if you do an oil change yourself, you can drain out more old oil compared to a garage.

Dave, wondering do you suffer with much oil consumption...? I'm doing maybe half a litre every 1000-1500 miles over the prior 12-18 months of ownership since I've been roughly monitoring it.

 

Just wondering about the oil you're using - quite on the economical side and possibly not great for spirited driving where oil temps might go (well) over 120°c. (maybe you don't thrash it very often??)

 

(Note: Apparently the Rev-up and HR engines had a oil temp sensor plumbed in to the ECU and triggers limp mode at 130°c. The thread is apparently there on the DE but blocked off as it's not used.)

 

I've recently added a oil cooler and pan spacer in the hope it subdues my consumption by keeping the oil cooler (thicker), less prone to shearing, evaporating and generally protecting the engine more effectively. As soon as I'd installed the oil cooler, after a few minutes idling it was roasting hot! Very satisfying after the time spent installing.

 

I've also been looking at different oils - I'm on Motul 8100 Eco-nergy 5w30 which apparently is great for fuel economy and power as it has a low viscosity but would be prone to shearing at high temps. (the 8100 X-Clean offers better shear resistance for example (HTHS rating)) Hopefully the oil cooler will help combat that on my 7krpm runs :D 

 

If it doesn't help consumption, then I might go to a 5w40 Ester oil like the Millers NT+... and get a temp sensor installed.

Cheers for the post, never known an engine be so temperamental to oil velocity index. Lad on the forum with owns a garage near Oxford, advised the same Millers Nanodrive 5w40 is what he uses in his DE and it since doesn't use a drop. Depending on what this does to warm idle pressure, might be just the ticket. I would rather use a bit of oil and have to top up and maintain a lower pressure. Lower pressure results in better performance, lowering the resistance inside the engine. It's very much a trade off between performance and protection.

 

For the last 6 oil changes ive swapped oil brands to feel which i liked and got on with in terms of response, consumption and engine quietness. Looking back ive tried the following:

 

Fuchs Titan GT1 5w30 C2

Used previously in a tuned SR20 and rated it, hence it being my first choice for the service. Used a noticeable amount oil, ish 800ml until the next oil change however i had been on track a few times that year so its to be expected. Overall very happy and for the costs, big thumbs up. 

 

Shell Helix Ultra 5w30 AG

Used for all of 1 month and did another oil and filter change as it was absolutely shocking!!! During the first drive to work and once warmed up, put my foot down on a slip road to join the A45 Meriden and it honestly felt like i had the handbrake on 2 clicks. The engine felt so gutless i thought the newly fitted magnetic sump plug was attracting the crank. Wouldn't recommend for any application, other than a Vauxhall Combo van. 

 

Motul 8100 eco-nergy 5w40 A5/B5

Heard very good thing about this oil so of course gave it a try, now being very aware of the affect oil blends can have on the VQ35 if you're paying attention. Felt ok, nothing special - a country mile better than Shell Helix AG however engine didnt feel as fruity or as eager compared with Fuchs Titan. Few more track sessions and the 10 litres bought initially (engine consumed 1300ml of it) was discarded into family members engines as top ups over the coming years. Used more than i would expect as i found out that one of my cam solenoids was all gunked up from sealant, plus made the mistake of starting the engine for a moment with these removed in an attempt to flush out any remains. The pressurised oil fountain was something to behold :oops:

 

Fuchs Super Syn 5w40

Back to what i knew and went for a 5w40 grade. Engine felt great again and had minimal consumption. Warm idle oil pressure went up noticeably on the gauge compared to all other 5w30's and i do prefer a slightly lower pressure for engine response and feel it must work the pump a tad less. No track action so weren't able to really compare with that regard, however routinely im happy to check and top up as and when needed. Again another very good showing from Fuchs.

 

Castrol Magnatec Stop-Start C3

Again used Magnatec in my old SR20 for years and years and never had an issue with it. Paying attention to the blend, visually to shake in a clear bottle (500ml left under the boot floor for top ups) the fluid has an almost elasticity/slime charater about it. All other oils I've used would come to a gradual rest slopping side to side in the container, this would come to rest abruptly as if it had memory. Very bizarre and never experienced anything like that this side of Nan's Sunday trifle. Funky magic fluid business aside, engine felt great and last year getting back out on track engine felt great. Warm idle temperatures higher than with the other 5w30's which peaked my interest. On a plus note, @cob1980 mentioned at the last midlands club meet of 2019 just how quiet the engine sounded being right up close. For the costs, very oil consumption would recommend for any daily VQ35 owner. 

 

Millers Trident 5w30 C3

This will the 6th different oil ive tried and not much to report as yet, cars not come off the drive sadly. Will be looking for warm oil pressure, engine repsonse, engine quietness and road daily driving consumption. Catch can is drained every other year due to the low annual mileage. 

 

EDIT - almost 6th months later using trident 5w30 and it's a keeper. Warm idle is exactly where is should be 12-15psi and the engine feels nice and lively when pushed. Topped up by 400ml in this time, no commuting due to lockdown mostly nice drives out/fast road. Also the oil is starting nice and clean when checking the oil level which hopefully is a good sign of being well looked after. First couple of oil changes I did it came out very dark. 

 

For the price and as well, £22.50 delivered for 5ltrs it's a very good oil for the VQ35DE.

Just seen the other thread - this is supposed to read 5w30, right? (based on photo in other thread)

 

(It's what I'm now on my second lot of, after Fuchs XTR last year which had mucho consumption. Recently made 269bhp @ hubs on the Motul at Abbey)
