1St drive home from dealership and top end is knocking

First off, they don't have to give you a courtesy car, and it's not their fault you live so far from them.

 

They cannot withhold the return of the warranty cost as you've not used it: None of the issues you have with the car fall under the warranty, they fall directly under the responsibility of the dealer to sort. You have to let them take the car back and assess it, and fix it as well.

And so it continues......

Had a few extra issues appear with the car now..

intermittently sticking rear caliper.

creaking from front passenger side when turning steering.

noticed a buckle on the dish of the rear wheel (causing vibration at around 70mph which I thought was balancing).

Exhaust rattling.

Intermittent cam chain rattle.

Clicking rear axle.

Still getting the top end knocking but not as bad.

Decided enough was enough and tried returning the car today,unsurprisingly the boss 'victor' wasn't there,I ended up waiting around for 3 hours for him to get back to me his solution was as follows....we want to take the car to another garage to carry out an assessment and price for work needed to see if warranty will cover the costs,if it's too expensive then a refund may be issued but minus an admin fee and cost of warranty!!

 

I calmly explained this was the 4th time

I'd been back to them,they had the car for 8 days without doing a single thing to it,I've already lost 3 days self employed work in total £600,paid out £100 for oil change, fuel for 4 80 mile round trips and can't be left without a vehicle again for however long.after getting a loads of lies excuses and attitude they've agreed to supply a courtesy car and come collect my vehicle but reckon all the other issues are part of buying an old car and will not be fixed,also tried proposing I've had the car too long so they have no obligation to honour anything,so I reminded him I phoned with the issue the very next day after purchase which pauses my '30' day period.

Looks like this is gonna become very messy,long winded and expensive. Also very very hard to reign in my temper as I'm getting increasingly annoyed with their attitude and bullshitting.

Does anyone have any good links for legal advice?

 

You did buy an almost 10 year old car with 70k on it , it will not be without some issues . Specialists have said the engine noise is normal so you cant reject on the "knocking"

 

Most of the other things are maintenance issues really, I dont see a straightforward case for rejection here

Get what you can out the dealer and suck up the rest.

 

I do not think that you have a case for rejection.

 

Due to the age and mileage of the car it is quite normal for maintenance items to require attention.

 

All the issues that you have mentioned do come into that category and are not difficult or expensive to fix.

 

Principles can be costly and bad for your health.

 

So to summarise: get what you can from the dealer, suck up the rest and then move on and enjoy your car.

As everyone said first port of call the dealer

 

I live in Harlow if you wanna compare noises , like people mention these cars love a good old weird and wonderful noise, my clutch loves to chat with me it's worse than the ex missus 😜

 

Had mine 3 years now and regular oil changes using Fuchs

Happy motoring all this time and mine makes a little noise so entirely up to you mate if you want a little piece of mind and listen to another

They've already had the car for 8 days to assess/repair it,in which time they did absolutely nothing and claimed it made no noise at all!!

Even though it could be clearly heard knocking away like crazy from over 10 feet away and 3 staff members agreed on that.

 

From what I've read I'm only obliged to give them one opportunity to assess and repair the car,so I think I'm being more than reasonable with them considering the running around I've done and costs I've incurred already

 

As for being a 10 year old car with 70k,that does not mean they can sell something that is not fit for purpose,of satisfactory quality and ignore consumers rights.....sticking brakes,defective steering,damaged wheel,engine fault with potential to cause total engine failure isn't exactly fit for purpose I'm sure most people would agree!!!!

The specialist never heard the Intermittent cam chain noise which is getting worse when it appears

 

The car was bought outright with cash

 

I have spoken to 2 350z specialists (both highly recommended on this forum) with regards to the cam chain issues alone and both estimated repair costs to be anywhere between £1000 and £2000 which I class as an expensive repair cost tbh...... Unless they're both taking liberties and someone can recommend a specialist to carry out the work for an inexpensive fee I have to take their pricing for what it is

 

Wizza 2000 thanks for the offer mate I appreciate it and may take you up on it depending on the outcome,I do accept the will be acceptable noises,my clutch/gearbox does the same but I haven't mentioned it before as I deem it acceptable after reading up on them from other members cars

The initial knocking that started on the drive home was not there on the test drive (which was about 10 mins long,but engine was left running for a further 20 mins)

 

In-between me paying deposit and collecting the car it had an oil change,before the oil change it run quietly and sounded like a healthy engine,after the oil change it sounded like a bag of spanners in a washing machine......

Whether the previous owner added an oil thickening additive to quieten it down is unknown

I was told to run the car for an additional week to see if it changed,whether this caused further damage is unknown.

Since the Nissan oil change the original knocking has quietened down but as a result you can now hear (what we believe to be)timing chain slapping intermittently

 

In my earlier post I said I'd spoken to 2 350z specialists in regards to timing chain costs,they haven't seen the car was just a price enquiry

 

I have had an ex stock car racer/engine builder

a friend with a huge bhp skyline (engine built by himself)

An ex 350z owner

A Nissan gtr specialist look at the car

All of which excluding gtr specialist think the same thing.... Timing chain issues and top end problems I.e.cam lobes,lifters,buckets etc

None of which can be accurately diagnosed until stripping down occurs

Gtr specialist advice was,he only works on gtr's but believes most 350s are noisy,would be a good idea to let new oil have time to get around engine and see how it goes

Just being devil's advocate mate I'm genuinely trying to look at this so you don't get stitched and you've got your all your bits lined up.

 

An ex stock car builder is NOT an expert unless he's a qualified mech running his own reputable business.

A friend with a skyline is NOT an expert

An ex 350z owner is NOT an expert

A GTR specialist IS an expert in mechanics and the only one you can really reference when talking about these issues with the geezer.

 

Only saying this because you need to be able to say with utter conviction "several industry experts XYZ have all concurred that this vehicle has XYZ problem"

 

Even then your one true expert is saying they are a noisy engine.

 

Could you not get it to an actual 350z expert (Abbey, Japex(?), Kaiser) or whomever is local to you who can say "your engine sir....is ****ed"?

 

And all of the above is not meant to be condescending. It's to make sure you have the best chance of this being

A) confirmed as a real problem by someone who knows

B) confirmed by someone who is indefatigably a 350z expert

ricey...i make you right and it was my intention to do so

 

so today ive taken yet another unpaid day off to deal with this poxy car.as it stands the dealership failed to do as they promised or even bother to contact me (no suprise there)

today has been my first opportunity to take the car to a specialist other than nissan due to the facts ive been back and forth to the dealer ,his garage that serviced it,dealer had the car for days on end.

 

ive been to kaizer motorsport for a diagnosis and guess what.....I WAS 100% CORRECT ON EVEYTHING I SAID!!!! ALL THE ADVICE I WAS GIVEN BY THE PEOPLE I MENTIONED WAS SPOT ON!!! if i could work out how to post the two clips i have of the car running and sounding like @*!# i would

kaizer is compiling a report for me and have quoted approximately 10-15 hours labour with costs between 1500-2000 and that is to deal with the timing chain and top end knocking alone,which is an expensive repair and not a cost i will be suffering at all

It wasn't that we were challenging what you said there were just a couple of conflicting bits of info.

 

I'm "glad" you've got a matching diagnoses so to speak (obviously it would be better if all of you were bang wrong!). So at least now you are armour plated to reject the car based on 2 expert opinions.

 

Which I might add is exactly what you should do. It's a pup

......Send it back to the kennel from whence it came.

As above, I dont think the majority on here doubted you - the point was that if you are going to reject a car you need to do it by the book. And that is prove that it was sold faulty and you have had it diagnosed by an independent expert. Follow the guidelines as can easily be found online and engage with the seller in the right way to get what you have to out of it.
