Ideas for something special but under £18K

Just found this site http://www.autotorque.net/mitsubishi-evo-ayc-acd-pump-repair-specialists/

The last time I sh@t my pants from buying an Evo X and ended up with a A5 reek machine. The dreaded AYC pump that was a £2500 fix can be sorted for under 1K now! Still not amazing but after spending the morning reading about all the issues that could blow up the 996 engine and leave you in a pool of sweat and tears,, it's actually not that bad. It might be a bit longer but I wouldn't feel as bad putting the miles on that car.

I like the SL500 but the performance is pretty pure considering the size of hte engine!

M96/97 engine failure is nowhere near as common as you might think. Get an early car with plenty of miles on, then have a boroscope check done. Plenty of miles means that if the IMS hasn't gone by now then it's very unlikely to, and if the boroscope check doesn't show any scoring then you're safe there too.

I'd be looking for a decent 3.4 with over 100k on the clock, if it were my money. Leaves plenty of cash to add a good exhaust, stereo and wheels, which would then leave you with an eminently driveable and pure car. :)

Keep it mint and watch the money poor in in a few years

Another car that falls into the " I wish I had kept it category"!

i wish i bought it instead of the Z kinda back in 2012 i could get one for around 6-8k now for a clean one as above your heading towards 20k

That's just ridiculous though imo.

Fairly poor to average performance by todays standards & not even 4WD which would have made it even better.

Why are those going for so much money nowadays do you have an idea? Just because of it being an "RS" badged car? Are they rare?

Because people are idiots. It's not even like it was a good car back then, much less today. They're chancing their arm on the fact it wears an RS badge, nothing more.

Some cars you can understand being worth the extra, holding value or even going up in value but those I just don't get it.

People definitely are idiots you're right.:teeth:

I'd say +1 to the RS not that I'm biased lol

Plus the fwd showed a clean pair of heels to the Z on the track :D

Cayman 2.7. Similar pace to the early 350z but a massively better sports car. Get a suspension refresh and Carnewal exhaust and it would be a great car, without the reliability problems of the 996 or 3.4 cayman. Alternatively, you might find a gen 2 2.9 boxster, fantastic cars.

Surely tryign to sell a porker with over 100K could be a challenge? Obviously you have applied tatical thinking on picking a car with that mileage but would it not scare most unassuming buyers off?

think what a MK1 escort RS is worth now, highly possible that a mk1 focus Rs could do the same

Maybe, but more fool them. Never buy a car based on mileage, not when it's over ten years old too.

You may well limit your market, but don't forget you're buying cheap and selling cheap, so as long as long as you've looked after it then there'll be plenty of buyers out there if it's a sensible colour combo i.e. not green and sand!

I looked into a few inspection services up this neck of the woods, they said they looked for the early signs of the major issues rms, ims and bore issues. They never said they would do the scan to actually look at the head to see if there is damage. I take it this inspection woudn't be of any use unless they do the scan?

That's all you need mate, or at least that's all I'd do. RMS will only be a weepy leak that you can sort at the next clutch change, IMS you've no way of telling without stripping the engine down (so no idea what they were on about there), and the bore scoring you can easy check with the boroscope. Any signs then walk away, if there's nothing then you're good to go :)

The misses likes them so I think its defo worth a looking! my neighbour has what looks to be a C2 but I am not that good with 911s. His doesn't look to be the best, so would be good to pull it with a corker!

Why did you suggest going for the 3.4 over the 3.6?

The bigger the capacity the thinner the cylinder wall, so the larger engine cars are more likely to be prone to bore scoring than the early cars. The early cars were also sadly more likely to suffer IMS failure, hence the reason for getting a 100k+ one as if it's not gone by that time then it's very unlikely ever to.

The 996 only weighed about 1300kg, so with 300bhp even the 3.4L is still going to be a brisk drive when you want it to be. :)

I must admit, if the vx hadnt come along i was sorely tempted with a 135i, they have really grown on me, much like a 350 with the right wheels, lowered and few small body additions, they look pretty menacing, i dont think there is much in it in the looks department over an e92.
