Clutch problems

So basically my car 370z nismo has just coverd 6500miles and the clutch has started to slip when under full load gets worse when the car heats up . Also the biting point is higher to what it was.

I took it to the dealer as its only a few months old and they have told me its wear and tear and they wont coveer it under warrenty unless they can prove its something else but to do this they want me to put down £370 for them to strip the gear box and do a inspection .

I do drive the car hard but should the cluch have gon already ? Thanks

It's a tricky one. My initial thoughts would be to take them to SCC, but it's certainly possible to kill a clutch via wear & tear in 6.5K miles.

Tbh, I'd take the car elsewhere, get them to put a better clutch in and suck up that cost BUT get them to check everything at the same time. If they find anything wrong, then bingo: You go back to Nissan and state your case then.

I am playing with the idea of a uprated cluch and flywheel idea but if i can get it done underwarrenty for free id rather do that for now anyways . The car hasnt seen the track but i do give her a few good runns out a month didnt think it would kill the clutch in such a short time after all the car should be built for alittle more abuse then a bit of spirited road driving . Just abit gutted ....

I would have to ask the question why would Nissan want to strip the gearbox to determine why you have a clutch slip problem???

If the clutch slips under load and the clutch is adjusted properly (it shouldn't need any adjustment after just 6.5K) then why the hell are they not investigating, apart from that how in hell can they put that down to ware and tear...its virtually a new car, have you thought about contacting Nissan head office and see what they have to say?

Tricky one, I can see this from your side, if the failure is due to components and not abuse/miss use then you would hope they would put this right. If you do end up going down the route of the uprated clutch and flywheel then I would tread carefully of getting a Nissan main dealer to fit this as 9 times out of 10 they prove to be less then helpful in my opinion.

No i havent contacted head office but i definatly will be .

West Way nissan in Aldershot where i purchased the car from have been absolutly shocking from the start but i wont go on a rant haha. Just after some advice as in who i shold be speaking to and whever this is normal . And no history of ever killing a clutch haha but then i have never ownd a car as powerful last car was an 2.0 diesel scirocco

They said the only way they can do a warrenty job is if the clutch wear is out of the ordinary ie caused by a damaged flywheel or something like that . even though its worne fast if the wear is even then its my fault and i would then be charged for the investigation and the gear box strip and refit . So they have me over a barrel lol

** Warning **

If you are going to take your car to this particular Nissan Dealer I would forget any idea of them fitting an uprated clutch and be very concerned in them actually fitting an OEM kit correctly. Not here to name and shame or go into to detail in this matter. Your gut feeling is usually the right one!

Do you do a lot of standing starts?

Or hill starts? Or heavy traffic? Or drive with your foot resting on the clutch pedal?

If none of the above, then a clutch should not wear out in that amount of mileage.

Spirited driving on open roads shortens the life very little, unless your slipping the clutch unnecessarily during gear changes.

It sounds like you've not been happy with the service from your dealer from the start. I'd be tempted to ask them to reconsider the warranty claim or you will have to relay your feedback to head office.

Edit - just seen Ewan's post.... Looks like you should definitely try another dealer if you want a warranty claim.

If not, go to a specialist independent.

Another key point I should mention in all this is that if your car is needing the Flywheel (Nissan DMF) then you maybe waiting a while as Nissan have no stock UK Europe and massive back orders in Japan.

I personally would recommend the opinion of a Zed specialist example - Horsham Developments and Abbey Motorsport closest to your area. They would also know which Nissan dealers not to take it to. And point you in the direction of a Nissan dealer that would be helpful,

Interesting that it is the Aldershot branch that you have had problems with. They have been excellent for me, sorting out numerous issues even when the car was out of warranty and i had not bought the car from them. Sorry to hear you are having issues. I will remember that for the future.

Surely this must be an issue with the clutch, i have had my car 4 years now, i've covered 45k miles including all around europe and i drive the car hard and im still on the first clutch

I would be very surprised that you can kill a clutch in 6.5k miles unless you do really like riding it.

I understand everyone elses points of view on going aftermarket as its better but after dropping 30k+ on a car I would be devastated. Part of the reason for going for a new car is that its underwarranty.

Just as an FYI I have done 57k in my 370 and in this time its done 4 track days/sessions. The clutch is perfectly fine still.

Thanks for everyones respones really appreciate it as i am pretty bumbed out about this as you can imagine! you have all reasured me that it carnt be just standard wear . Just need to decide which nissan dealership to go to know .

I have done no more than 5 standing launches since new . no track days yes its been driven in a few traffic jams but most miles are on free roads and i dont ride the cluch or atleast i dont think i do haha so their must be some sort of problem

I had a burning smell in my 370z a few years back with only 4500k on the clock the Nissan dealer told me the clutch was basically burnt out, although it still drove great, but they said it was not under warranty ( wear & tear ) i was fuming

I contacted Nissan UK explaining the situation, they contacted the dealer, pictures of the clutch were exchanged between the Dealer and Nissan UK. Then Nissan UK authorised the Dealer to fit me a new clutch, great result

I now have a 370 Nismo and every now and again i get that horrible burning smell in the car, generally when i am trying to carefully park my car half on the path and road, so obviously im slipping the clutch slightly.

Don't let the dealer fob you off, they are only happy when you are parting with your money.

Contact Nissan UK and explain the situation. Good Luck

ps i wouldn't mention that bit about driving the car hard.

I have always found martins Nissan in Winchester to be very very helpful . Might be worth a phone call / trip to them ?

I'd would be going ape if I'd bought a new car and the clutch went at that sort of mileage !!!

Hi mate is this one a high performance centre ? Ive been told the 370z can only go to one of these ? Thanks

Not that I'm aware of mate .... But it's just a 70!?

Give them a ring as when I had a issue with my old 50 they were absolutely brilliant at sorting it out under warranty
