  1. Many of you have been asking Colin to share his knowledge and experience on paper. Well here it is!

For the first time in over four decades, inspired by the questions our clients ask time and again, Colin is publishing the engineering view on constructing your successful track day.

The first in a series: Your Track Day Guide - Where to Begin & What to Buy - looks at all those questions you ask when first thinking about heading to track:

    • What car would you buy for track days?
    • Would you upgrade the brakes?
    • Which circuit would you choose for your first track day?
    • What is the likelihood I will damage my car?
    • Do I need insurance?

Written to help you make informed decisions, optimise spend, purchase the right equipment, ensure you keep safe and have fun. 'Your Track Day Guide' will help you enjoy every circuit mile you drive.

Containing knowledge for both seasoned enthusiasts and novices, this guide is informative, helpful as well as useful.

    • What car will suit your life & driving preferences
    • Choose the right track day car for you
    • Open top car or fixed roof – what do you need to consider?
    • Heavy car or light car – what are the implications?

    And much more.

The paperback is available to buy on Amazon now, with an eBook following in the near future.

All proceeds after the deduction of fixed Amazon costs for the purchase of Your Track Day Guide will be donated to Mission Motorsport. The £18.50 purchase price has been determined to generate a donation of £5.95 per copy. Mission Motorsport work tirelessly to support veterans through their philosophy of 'Race, Retrain, Recover'.

Two positive outcomes – you are learning to participate in safe track days, whilst contributing to a worthy cause. A win for all.

This is what Dickie Meaden, co-founder of Evo Magazine, journalist & racer had to say about the book:

“There's very little to beat the thrill of driving on a race track. The freedom to drive fast. The challenge of learning the smoothest lines. The satisfaction that comes from getting the best from yourself and your car. Few things are more absorbing or addictive. However, if you're new to it, track driving can also be daunting and intimidating. Scary, even. At least if you attempt to drive too fast too soon, or take to the track in a poorly prepared car. There is much to learn. Fortunately Colin Hoad is here to help. Or rather his book is. With four decades of wisdom distilled into its pages, this comprehensive Track Day Guide contains everything the enthusiastic newcomer needs to get the absolute maximum from their track day adventures. The only thing it won't prepare you for are the number of friends you'll make, the laughs you'll have and the unforgettable memories you'll bank along the way. So, enjoy the book, and enjoy your track days. Something tells me you're going to have a blast.”

We trust you enjoy the read.

Amazing that you can buy a house next to a motorway and there's no noise limit 24hrs a day, council won't listen to any complaints and its just tough...........buy a house near a race track and the council will close it down due to noise restrictions during less hours.

Donington is always the one that confounds me ... how is it ok for aeroplanes to take off and land 7 days a week but a few cars ....... makes no sense whatsoever :scare:

Noise limits is a big thing that’s not going away and only getting stricter and for me the most frustrating thing is knowing how one circuit compares to another. As your article says 98dB driveby at one circuit will be completely different to the same level at a different venue as the distance it’s measured from will be different.

Would be be great if they could all come to an agreed limit that is enforced the same at each track so you confidently have a system that meets that and therefore meets them all. I’ve rang circuits and all they can say is if it’s meets the static then it “should” pass the drive by but cars just don’t conform to that logic. With the cost of some track days it’s way more ££ than you want to gamble with before knowing you won’t get thrown off.

Yes a common number would be helpful to the track enthusiasts, they'd likely go for the lowest possible denominator though which might then reduce the options to near zero.  Unless you have an electric car ........

  4. Once you have the track bug, perfecting the optimum lap and most efficient racing line can become an obsession! Whether you are new to track days or are looking to get serious and enter the world of motor racing; tracking your performance is a key part of your driver development.

  6. Another great Performance Driver 'Track' Day with Nissan 350z & Porsche enthusiasts on Sunday at Millbrook. The sun shone & your own Flashback & Richard won the days awards. Richard put himself on the league table in 3rd place, setting the fastest time of the day in the Gymkhana: 42.19. Great time putting a Porsche inbetween the Nissans on the table. Flashback was the Driver of the Day.  A couple of photos here to capture the moment.  Lovely group & another enjoyable day of driver development.

Can anyone recommend track insurance to cover me for Sunday? Adrian Flux apparently can't cover me!

Ryan Motorsport will quote you for a stand alone policy Taybo.  FYi some take it out, some don’t – probably more that don’t.  It’s whatever gives you peace of mind but know that Health & Safety is our highest priority as is that you leave as you arrived.  We’re now in our 14th year and have worked with over 4,600 clients …. we have never had an incident in a client vehicle at Millbrook.  The instructor is sat alongside you when it is your turn for the exercises and an extra pair of eyes looking out for you both.  There will be other users in the proving ground on the day as we don’t have it exclusively – cost would be extreme if we did … but it is a professional working environment.  The facility isn’t like Silverstone/Donington etc. which is built with run off areas in mind, so other than the exclusive circuits (Steering Pad / Dynamics Pad / Mile Straight Apron) there isn’t run off areas to ‘fall into’ – but this is why we like it.  Training is progressive and you will be making incremental increases as you develop through the day.

    Hope this helps.

Go on then, let me be the first. Please put me down for the Cornering Masterclass day.

    Hi Woodzman

Very sorry but Sunday 24th June needs to be rescheduled due to Millbrook Event activity on the Steering Pad.  I could offer Saturday 2nd June as the first alternative ... would this date work for you?  Let me know and I'll then plan accordingly.  Otherwise I'll be in touch with a later date in due course.

Is there a deadline for booking on this, assuming not all placed get filled?

I'm seriously interested in the performance driver day (1) but don't think I can pull the money together in time...

Over the next week longsh07 I will be offering the event to some of the other forums we work with.  It is therefore possible the day may be filled within a couple of weeks.  But I am happy to leave it open if there are spaces, up to a week before.  The only way to guarantee a place is to pay for it.  But I'll be more active with updates in the coming days/weeks so you will know what the situation is at any time.

  11. Hi Taybo & Flashback

I'm going to offer this date to other forums if there are no fellow Z'ers looking to join you - will get on that this week and update you.
