Who is Wim Hof? 

Wim Hof (born 20 April 1959), also known as The Iceman, is a Dutch extreme athlete noted for his ability to withstand freezing temperatures. He has set Guinness World Records for swimming under ice and prolonged full-body contact with ice, and still holds the record for a barefoot half marathon on ice and snow.

In all, he has claimed 26 world records for his various feats, including the Guinness World Record for longest ice bath (1 hour, 52 minutes and 42 seconds), enabling him to rightfully be called “the Iceman.” But that's not enough for him. He wants more. He wants to change the world.

I figured this guys credentials are bang on, however of course still wanted to try them out myself before reaching a conclusion. I'm always dubious of 'mind over matter' and the placebo effect.

Since doing the WHM found almost straight away I'm less hungry between breakfast and lunch. Normally after breakfast and around 10-10:30 I'd always need some toast or crumpets to get me through till lunch. Working from home it was a mix of convenience, boredom and habit. On the third day I thought I really don't feel hungry, so let's hold out till lunch and I've done the same ever since. Actually came across the metabolic rate studies after experiencing it first hand and I'm normally always hungry.

I've data logged my cold showers every day, starting off at 30 seconds and gradually going up to over 4 minutes.

What I can say is I'm doing it and it works for me. Improved mood, less back ache, more focus, less need/want to snack out, sense of achievement also. 

- Cold showers indoors

- Cold shower outside on the patio *thankfully garden not over looked lol

 - Cold bath indoors and out

 - 4mins ice bath outside

 - Breath held for 4mins which I think is mind blowing.

Our recycling wheelie bin served an extra purpose in freezing my butt. Thoroughly scrubbed and rinsed out and boiled twice for good measure.

In this study, the researchers collected blood from Wim Hof before and after an 80 minute full-body ice immersion session, and they exposed those blood cells in cell culture to a bacterial endotoxin (called lipopolysaccharide or LPS) which elicits as strong inflammatory response from the body.

In this endotoxin experiment, the researchers compared the results of Wim’s blood cells with blood samples collected from a comparison group of 112 individuals. They found that Wim’s results were very different to all of the comparison group results. His blood cells displayed a much reduced pro-inflammatory response and increased anti-inflammatory signal.

The researchers concluded that the Wim Hof method “seems to evoke a controlled stress response“.

I've long since grown out of my car obsessions, my car is 7 years old this year, owned from new with no plans to change. But idle hands doesn't sit comfortably with me, so 12 months ago I managed to persuade the family finally fulfilling my 00s fantasies was a good thing, and life is too short not take risks.........

The build is still 3-4 months away from completion, however the shell and first fixs are done. In the last 12 months we've had unsuitable foundations discoveries, unearthed an unexpected well (yes well), cranes + 35tons of steel over power cables, mis judged glazing, but thankfully no unexpected newborns, changes in health, or calls to bank that form part of Kevin McClouds script.

The modding of cars sort of gave me some parallel insight into the potential issues of the house build project, but everything on the house is at a totally different scale, time, effort, costs, it even gets into my dreams........

The work left is the equivalent of repainting/fitting of the trim, some spit/polish on the paint (which I was never good at :)), the biggest moments of jeopardy, touching wood, is done :).

If anyone is thinking of doing something similar happy to share experiences, bare in mind the house isn't done, but we do have keys.

So hopefully these will keep it away.

Just hope it doesn't just choose a different wheel as I don't think I can be bothered surrounding my whole car with this stuff

I was driving through a village with a 40 limit at the time which give me time to ponder what to do when the road opens up again:

A. Take the moral high ground and do 50 and watch the RS disappear in the distance 

B. Drop to 3rd and totally floor it

I knew that he knew that I knew we would both floor it.

Jesus, the Z is seriously fast! It's like instantly away and it's fair to say the RS kept up but not around the bends.

As you're aware I now drive a Porsche Cayman. One of my neighbours keeps complaining about the startup noise from the exhaust.

I live in a little close, whereby his front door is about 2.5-3 cars lengths from mine. See photo below (grey door is his)

I leave for work at 7.30am Monday to Friday and he complains that Carla starting up wakes him up. She is loud but she's OEM. It's loud for about 30 seconds then quietens down.

He's spoken to me about it in the past and I now reverse into my bay so my exhaust doesn't face his house. That was better but not good enough. I've tried parking a bit further from my house, so not reversing up to the edge of my bay, so the exhaust is further from my house so the noise doesn't reflect back towards his place too much. That wasn't good enough.

He then suggested starting her then driving off straight away. I tried that, and Carla didn't like that. She felt sluggish for a few miles. I also tried starting her up then driving a little down the road and stopping until she'd got quieter. Better but not great. Still felt a bit sluggish for a few mins.

Yesterday when I got home, he came out to see me again. He started saying he can't handle it, and suggested I park down the road. I said I'm not parking my car away from my house in case it gets broken into or stolen. Yes we live in a very safe area but I'm not taking any chances. He then said he's started looking into moving house as it's got so much for him. It even woke up his 7/8 year old daughter the other day. He shares custody so has her every other week or so.

Before all this we used to get along, very well in fact. But since I bought Carla in September, he's avoided me until maybe January when he first told me that my exhaust annoys him.

Part of me thinks get a bloody job and 7.30am isn't early. Out of the 8 houses in our little close, he's the only one who has complained. He's a pilot and used to work for Qatar airways. When I bought the house 6 years ago, he was living in Doha, only coming back every few weeks. Then COVID happened and he didn't come back at all. He then took the decision in November 2021 to quit so he could spend time here with the plan to eventually fly for a British based airline.

His new job starts in a few months and he's saying that he'll be sleeping during the day after night flights and with the summer, he'll have to have his window open which will be worse for him.

I've tried googling ideas but nothing really can be done. I'm going to get the cargraphic exhaust valve mod done at some point so maybe that might help but there's no conclusive proof it will. Basically I'd be able to use a remote control to close the Porsche sports exhaust valve or open it when I want as opposed to it only opening over 3500rpm and under 1000rpm on idle. I was going to get this to make the exhaust louder for day to day running but if it helps with this issue then that's a bonus.

Selling Carla is not an option. I'd lose too much money. So yeah am I being an a-hole here?
