It doesn't obstruct the field of view from the drivers perspective as it is on the passengers side of the windscreen, I am just wondering whether this area is taken in to account in an MOT. I can't see that it is but I suppose I am trying to find a suitable explanation for the cameras removal.

I found this article: https://www.driving.co.uk/car-clinic/car-clinic-will-having-a-windscreen-camera-mean-ill-fail-my-mot/

Mine is to the left of the black dotted area (behind the rearview mirror, when sat in the car) as the suction cup won't stick to the black dotted area, so can't be hidden behind the rearview mirror. It was installed by Halfords. If it makes any difference it is on a roadster.

To go a little off topic...

If the dash cam was removed for the mot as it blocks drivers view, would it not be useless in the event of an accident as the drivers sight was obstructed by the camera??

Dash cams have to fitted in a certain position so as not to obstruct the driver,s view and also so that the driver can not view the data as it is being recorded.

It is an offence to not position the cam in the correct position.

I didn't know this.

There was a discussion about mechanics turning off dashcams on a mechanic group im on. There was 2 main reasons mechanics gave. Firstly they felt it was a security risk, as owners could play back footage and see clearly inside their workshop. See what tools they have, where they were kept, probably scope the area out nicely etc. Mechanics are very protective of their tool chests etc as there`s some serious moneys worth in them and its their livelyhood. The other reason given is that they just didnt like "big brother" watching & listening to them. Some customers are the type who complain about every little thing and should the mechanic say something which could be mis-interpreted, or do something the customer wasnt happy with then that would be the mechanics job on the line.

Each to their own really. I dont have a dash cam in my 911 turbo and happily leave it at my local indi for them to work on. Some of their mechanics do actually look like they have come straight out of prison, but the place has an impeccable reputation, go the extra mile and so I trust them. Afterall, when you see some of the supercars they look after there, it makes my car seem pretty average to them.

All good valid points. I suppose if it was fitted in the way then the mot tester/garage was right to disconnect it. I also see the sense in rabbitstews comments.

Choice seems to be either have one fitted discreetly so it cannot be seen or find an alternative garage you would put 100percent trust in regardless.

I think I am biased, I know of a mechanic sacked by bmw for powersliding and driving at speed a customers m3. All caught on a discreet dashcam.

A member on here was racially abused by the staff performing a service on his car iirc. Only came to light because the dash cam recorded them.

Would I want to know if the company paid to service my vehicle employed racist arseholes? Would you?

In addition, didn't a guy who put his Porsche in to a garage recently have it written off by the garage owner's son? They paid out £12k insurance and managed to avoid any criminal negligence charges, had that been caught on dash cam showing the young lad driving like a walloper it'd have been a different story.

The cam stays on, or the service happens somewhere else. Period.

unfortunately it happens, at indi and large chains, every one employed is an individual and has the potential to be a douche. Id instantly dismiss any of my techs not respecting a customers car. I agree with rabbitstew about the tools too.

I wouldn't want to be filmed whilst doing my day job either, tbh. Nothing to hide particularly, but I may have conversations with colleagues that could easily be taken out of context or use language that could be found offensive by some.
